Abstract Figure Painting

I'm a Sicilian, Greek, Irish trans man who has chosen to raise myself in California. My politics were shaped in my adolescence, auditing classes at UCSC, and being romanced by radical leftists born in Louisville, KY. I've softened while sitting in community with medicine. I've learned to listen and believe black leaders. And I've come to rest in indigenous wisdoms.

As an artist, I have always been drawn to the complexity of love. I wrestle, I dance, I surrender to the intellect and emotion that love demands of my attention. Love is a mistress I will turn to throughout life. I will honor every season, knowing that I have always chosen to return.

What is Tempered Rebellion?

Tempered Rebellion is quite simple. It is not audacious enough to be “the way,” but is a home for those who subscribe to the idea that while here on earth, we are here to master love and relating.

Love is the rebellion. A trailblazing child. The blade, the fire. It is a single source that initiates us to ask for better. “Love me the way I need to be loved.” Love needs intelligent guidance in the language of relationships, which is the art of negotiation. You and I did not arrive here without such. There were biological resources and demanding forces at play. Humans were weighing their lives while in the chaos of governments and their agendas. There was grace and humility in the effort of your arrival. You will never know the countless negotiations Earth and humans had to make for you to be here.

We face difficult truths, such as admitting that life is intertwined with death. When we bring a new life to earth, we acknowledge that we usher them here not just to live but also to die. It is easy to understand, then, why we would need antidotes to deal with the reality of our existence.

To bathe in the royalty of belonging to this community of gathering relational knowledge requires a great sacrifice. A willingness to feel, investigate, and rest. To call upon ourselves to excavate our needs and desires. To do the difficult work of demanding the right fiber of pleasure be woven into the backdrop of our inevitable suffering.

Tempered Rebellion seeks compassion for living big, for demanding adventure, and a safe right of passage. This rebellion utilizes the medicine of self-preservation. We learn about the alchemy of fire and the restrictions it places on us in the natural world. Tempered Rebellion then becomes the philosophy of balanced bravery. A tight rope high in the sky with a safety harness and a parachute. Of course, there will be mistakes. How do we make these mistakes and endeavour to cause the least amount of harm possible? And how do we forgive ourselves and engage in healing when harm can not be avoided?

As your coach, it is not my prerogative to tell you how or what to do with your life. My job is to model for you the tenderness and understanding you must develop to stick with the life that is yours. You have been building from beyond the veil. You are the master carpenter. And yet we know that upon entering this formal challenge to create, we have been met with great criticism, comparison, and envy, whether from internal or external sources. Moving in broad daylight is vulnerable. Even in the cover of night, there lie personalities that can thwart our efforts. Living is not without tact. To move through life with any kind of ease or reward requires us to play with exceptional accuracy. Not to be mistaken for perfection. But instead, the willingness to engage in the depth of continual effort when we are resourced enough to do so.

You and I are going embrace the steps backward. We will hold them with equal esteem to the steps forward. Your foundation in learning the dance of life will absolutely benefit your past, current, and future selves. And it will also benefit a future partnership should you choose to engage in co-creating your life alongside someone else's. To the people reading who have contemplated that being “single” is the right path for them, I am wholeheartedly here for that version of living as well. I do not have puritanical ideas about what a meaningful life is or isn’t. I am here to champion your architecture, not someone else’s ideas of how to live a full and beautiful life. This is my mind singing a song of initiation to you. I trust that if this song resonates with you personally, you will find me when the time is right for you. Thank you for embarking on your Tempered Rebellion.
